AKHA SPEAKER CHARGES YOUTH ON POSITIVE CONTRIBUTION TO STATE DEVELOPMENT

Speaker of Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly, Barrister Onofiok Luke, who charged youth to contribute positively to the development of the state, said the House of Assembly is partnering the executive and the Judiciary arms of government to bring about meaningful life for the citizenry as well as visitors resident in the state.

The Speaker gave the charge, Wednesday while addressing a joint sitting of the Student Union Parliament of the University of Uyo during the 2016 Legislative Week of the University where he presided over a Special Session on the students legislature as they debated on the theme, “The Legislature: Panacea For Sustainable Democracy and Youth Development.”

Meanwhile, the 2016 Legislative Session of the University of Uyo has identified the legislature as the closest arm of government to the people in a democracy.
The student legislators, who also discussed on the functions of parliamentarians, agreed that lawmaking, oversight activities and representation form the nucleus of the functions of the legislature.

In a resolution passed during plenary, Wednesday by the University of Uyo students legislators, the House came to the understanding that the legislature acts as a vehicle for sustainable democracy and youth development.

Motion for the adoption of the resolution was moved by the Speaker of the Faculty of Law, Mr. Ralph Kennedy, while Mr. Edidiong Nathaniel of the Faculty of Agriculture seconded the motion.

In his remarks, the presiding President of the Senate and Speaker of the Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly, Barrister Luke, who presided over the session, said “let me thank you once again for giving me the privilege and opportunity to preside over your parliament and let me commend members of the students union parliament, the Speaker and members for this collaboration, for this initiative.”

“We Should not sit on the fence to begin to criticize negatively. We all must be able to contribute positively so that we can arrive at that developed democratic experience that we all yearn for.”
