SENATOR J. J AKPANUDOEDEGHE AND HIS ALBATROSS

By Chief Ita Awak

This week’s clearly underwhelming jumping of ship by Senator Akpanudoedeghe, from the All Progressives’ Congress, APC, to the New Nigerian Peoples’ Party, NNPP, is undeniably some kind of strategic political maneuver that the Senator believes will help him achieve his apparently obsessive idea of being the Governor of A’Ibom State. Whereas many got to know of JJA’s intended decamping about two weeks before the drama played out in the public, how events unfold in the future shall determine how politically strategic, savvy or foolhardy the move was.

There is no gainsaying the fact that JJA was a formidable force in the A’Ibom State Chapter of the APC. It must be said, regardless of how his impulsive abrasiveness and divisive self opinionatedness rubbed off on the sensibilities and sensitivities of quite a number, the auric influence he generated and exuded within the APC imbued many of especially his followers and admirers with the zealous confidence that, if such resources were added to others and well harnessed and channeled, the Party stood a good chance of winning the 2023 gubernatorial elections in the State. But how many of the JJA enthusiates, enablers, supporters, followers, powerful State managers and orchestras of the cultic AAC in A’Ibom State APC have joined Senator JJA in his new entrance into and expedition in NNPP? It is because the vast majority of the influential people who were aiding and abetting the capricious whims of JJA in the AAC, and thereby sowing fatal seeds of discontent and disunity, have remained put in APC that I call JJA’s defection to NNPP “underwhelming.”

And we ask: How does Senator Udoedeghe imagine he is going to use the ragtag remnant of his group to build the NNPP into the resilient, creative and enterprising political force that will endear majority of A’Ibom people to vote him/NNPP into the Hilltop Mansion in 2023? It is left to be seen what will chance.Let it be said loud and clear that the idiotic war of attrition that Senator Akpabio and Senator Akpanudoedeghe ill advisedly introduced into the body of A’Ibom State APC, just to tickle their vaingloriousness and entertain their empty ultracentric egos, has left the Party in a precarious position. However, whereas it may appear for now that Senator Akpabio is the pyrrhic(?) winner of the debacle, let no one think the erroneous idea that Senator Akpabio is the one who orchestrated and is responsible for the decampment of Senator Udoedeghe.

In my humble opinion, the one person solely responsible for JJA unceremoniously vacating the APC is none other than Senator Udoedeghe himself. There is absolutely nothing wrong in one nursing the ambition to achieve or attain any height one desires. But if one’s goal is to lead a people, it is imperative to consciously endeavor to develop some appreciable degree of emotional intelligence and learn to genuinely build consensus across barriers.

As we hear that not a few political nerves were frayed in Abuja by JJA’s characteristic modus, all put together, it is clear that what spun Senator JJA into his latest political adventure is the unintended consequences of the forces he unleashed through his interpersonal and political actions. And this remains his albatross.

PUT SUCCINCTLY, SENATOR J J AKPAN UDOEDEGHE IS THE ONE AND ONLY FACTOR MILITATING AGAINST JJA FORGING THE NEEDED POLITICAL ALLIANCE TO BECOME GOVERNOR. CHANGING POLITICAL PARTIES OFFERS NO SUCCOR OR SOLUTION.
