Senator Aniekan Bassey of the Akwa Ibom North-East Senatorial District, one of Nigeria’s representatives at the Sixth Legislature of the Parliament of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), is currently in Kano State for the 2024 Second Extraordinary Session of the Parliament.
The Extraordinary Session, which is chaired by the Deputy President of the Senate and First Deputy Speaker of the ECOWAS Parliament, Senator Barau Jibrin, has been convened to consider and adopt the Rules of Procedure and Strategic Plan for the Sixth Legislature as well as the 2024 Work Programme. The session will also provide members the opportunity to deliberate on important issues affecting the ECOWAS Community.
Senator Bassey is the Deputy Chairman of the Senate Committee on Agriculture Production Services and Rural Development. The choice of Kano for the Extraordinary Session is due to its strategic location as the commercial nerve center of Northern Nigeria and West Africa.
A highlight of the event, which is scheduled to run from Monday, May 20, to Saturday, May 25, 2024, includes a visit to the revered Emir of Kano, Alhaji Aminu Ado Bayero, at his palace.
