A student of the Akwa Ibom State University (AKSU), Miss Iberedem Raymond Otu, has emerged the overall winner of the maiden edition of the Rt. Hon. Onofiok Luke sponsored Essay Competition, in honour of the pioneer Chairman of the Akwa Ibom State Chapter of the Nigerian Institute of Public Relations (NIPR), late Chief Okon W. Udoh.

Miss Otu, who received a cash prize of N100,000, was treated to a red carpet reception on Thursday during the 2021 End-of-the-Year Get-Together organized by the Institute at Image House, Uyo.

According to Elsie Udofia the Head Judge , the Committee received 43 entries on the topic “The Role of Public Relations in Building Akwa Ibom State”, from students of tertiary institutions across Akwa Ibom State, out of which seven were disqualified for various reasons including non eligibility to contest.

According to Elsie Udofia who is also the Station Manager of Redemption FM, Abak, the best 10 essays were selected and the candidates invited to write another test on the topic “As Commissioner for Information, how would you engage Public Relations for the good of Akwa Ibom State” for the second round of assessment, which was basically to test the aptitude and independence of the participants.

“Miss Iberedem Raymond Otu scored 66 points to emerge 1st prize winner and was followed by Mr. Nse Reuben Isong, a student of the Heritage Polytechnic, who scored 64 points to receive ₦75,000 and Miss Precious Matthew Edet, a student of the University of Uyo, who scored 62 points, to emerge 3rd with a cash prize of ₦50,000. Four others went home with consolation prizes,” she said.

Speaking, the Chairman of the event and Director General of the Akwa Ibom Broadcasting Corporation (AKBC), Pastor Anietie Ukpe said it was fitting to mark the year and commit same to God for the progress and future of the Chapter. He also delivered a keynote address on the Essence of Effective writing in Public Relations.

In his goodwill message, the State Deputy Governor and Fellow of the Institute, Mr. Moses Ekpo, who was represented by his Press Secretary, Pastor Ekikere Umoh, lauded the initiative of the national lawmaker and appealed that it be sustained.

He thanked members of the Institute for being part of his 80th birthday celebration and further tasked the Chapter to underscore its essence as the 2023 politics begins.

In his remarks, the Chapter Chairman of NIPR, Mr. Nsemeke Udoakpan, thanked members of the Institute for their zeal and commitment to activities of the Chapter and congratulated winners of the Rt. Hon. Onofiok Luke Essay Competition as well as all the participants.

He said the feat would not have been possible but for the immeasurable support of the member representing Etinan/Nsit Ubium/Nsit Ibom Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, Barrister Onofiok Luke, in the development of education in Akwa Ibom State.

Highpoint of the colourful event, which was put together by the Mercy David-led Planning Committee, included Award presentation, special performance by the students in appreciation to sponsor of the Essay Competition, dances and lots of delicacies.
