ETIDO ESU: A SIGNATURE OF RESTORATION TO HIS GENERATION

BY Kufre Umoefon.

It is palpably an incontrovertible fact that a good legacy is not just a treasured treasure but also an eternally profitable asset. Consequently, I can’t agree any less with Umoefon’s Capsules for Inspiration: “before you act, know that history will either debit or credit you; you could live forever only if your life and times had a message other generation would find irresistible”. This was the case of Chief Alfred Esu of Ikewn in Obot Akara LGA of Akwa Ibom state, who lived and left emulative legacies generations will never forget.

Politically, he was a state house of Assembly member who incontestably took credit for the creation of Otoro LGA, which gave birth to the now Obot Akara LGA. He brought massive development to his people and engaged much in both philanthropic and humanitarian services.

Before joining active politics – because of his passion for sports – Chief Alfred laid the foundation of sports in his local government by establishing and managing a football club he called Mack Ship Football (which made historical impacts when it lasted). This answered the question why almost all his children were best legs at the time. Sir Alfred Esu’s attainment and influence indisputably took Ikwen to an enviably glorious height among other communities.

Whenever December came, Ikwen day was in every mind because of the interesting packages it usually came with especially, football. Unfortunately, as it always is, the demise of this great asset of Ikwen gradually ebb this great community and occasion into a decomposed state.

Armed with this painful reality, Etido vowed to revivify the lost glory of Ikwen and, consequently worked things out before sending emissaries to his people. Besides the day’s celebration and Alfred Esu’s football tournament, this US based strategist is coming with a loaded package for the benefit of all, starting with a workshop to sanitize and align the people’s mentality with the 21st century ideology.

As expected, when the blissful news first came that an indigenous son of Ikwen has put everything in place to resurrect this glorious “Ikwen day” and Sir Alfred Esu’s legendary legacies, there were more Thomases than believers not just because of the passage of time but because there was none in sight with such redemptive tenacity. But when the name, Etido Esu, was unveiled as the architect of Ikwen’s image restoration, the atmosphere in the entire local government was thrown into ecstasy while the Thomases became evangelist of conviction; all because of the trust and confidence the people have in him. There is no doubt that, in the lips of strangers – who don’t know this proud son of Ikwen – a question thus would be found: “but who is Etido Esu that has earned so much endearment and trust of the people beyond his immediate community?” the answer is simple!

Indeed, beyond carrying Sir Alfred Esu’s estimable persona in his DNA as a biological son, Etido is exceptionally an altruist who has noiselessly, overtime, planted seeds of kindness and generosity that grew to bear fruits of love and endearment between him and the people. Suffice it to say that this silent achiever’s major concern in life is to secure the well being of humanity; that is why he selflessly invests much in humanitarian services to alleviate the suffering of the people and has significantly touched and changed several lives positively, all with the proceeds of his personal Endeavour.  : Many indigent students are in school through his sponsorship; many lives are saved by footing hospital bills; he has empowered both the youths and women; above all, he is a passionate kingdom investor.

It is not a surprise, however, that he was named Etido (good deed) because he is, indeed, a purveyor of great values: integrity, honesty, hard-work, optimism, diligence, focus, determination, commitment to tasks and respect for elders and authorities, he has raised so many leaders of tomorrow among others. He is a unity bridge architect with social mien that focuses on uniting people.

Defined by his upbringing and shaped by his international exposure, Etido is remarkably intelligent, outstandingly innovative, terrifically inspiring and brusquely forthright, naturally accommodating yet so routinely humble and religiously God fearing. Whenever he speaks, his words are typically full of life, and like crude oil that has many other contents when refined beyond the oil, they contain peace, love, motivation and respect; all decorated with decorum.

The summation of his being, to say the least, is that these rare qualities and traits are only common with great leaders of our time. It is therefore not unanticipated that, both in Nigeria and in Diaspora, he has always been found worthy to be handed scepters of leadership. Both national and international awards and accolades testify to his usual fantastic contributions and achievements. He is the international coordinator of two great organizations in Nigeria – Akwa Ibom Dignity and integrity defenders Foundation (AKIDIDEF) and Supreme Council of Obot Akara Local Government Indigenes among others.

It’s imperative to note that this illustrious son of Obot Akara may have been everything but never a politician. Several attempts by several reputable groups, individuals and dignified stakeholders to make him step into the father’s political shoes, so as to bring his trusted leadership experience to bear in politics had been in futility.

Since his passion to liberate his people is undoubtedly his calling – and politics presents a better and bigger platform to touch more lives – may I join his teaming admires and other groups and organizations to beg him to please, hearken to the clarion call to make Obot Akara great because everybody cannot be wrong. We all need your first-rate experience and terrific service!
