…AS STUDENTS’ UNION HONOURS AKS PDP PUBLICITY SECRETARY

Beginning from this academic session, students in the Department may be taking their strive for academic excellence a few notches higher, following the institution of a new enticing Prize for academic excellence for best students at all levels in the Department.

Instituting the Prize shortly after being conferred with an Award of Excellence at a Dinner organized by the Students Historical and Diplomatic Society of Nigeria, University of Uyo, Comrade Ini Ememobong said the award which is in support of Governor Udom Emmanuel’s giant strides in all levels of education in the state will be awarded to the male and female students with the highest CGPA in all levels in the Department.
“Beginning from this year, We are going to collaborate with the leadership of your Department and this Students’ Association to ensure that 4 male students with the highest Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) drawn from Year 1-4 get N50,000 each as reward for academic excellence. This is part of my efforts in appreciating and supporting the results-oriented efforts of His Excellency, Governor Udom Emmanuel in improving the standards of education at all levels in this state. In the same vein, 4 female students with the highest CGPAs drawn from Year 1-4 will also get the same Cash Prize. This also is in support and appreciation of Her Excellency the wife of the Governor, Deaconess Martha Udom Emmanuel who has been using her pet project the Family Empowerment and Youth Reorientation Programme (FEYREP), to drive many empowerment initiative for families while also pursuing a result-oriented programme of Youth reorientation”, the Akwa Ibom PDP Publicity Secretary and Former NANS President explained.
Earlier in a talk entitled “History as an Academic Discipline: Relevance and Economic Viability in Contemporary Society”, the Akwa Ibom PDP Publicity Secretary told the students that emerging realities in the world today has made the Discipline of History even more relevant stressing that this comes with better economic promises for those in the field.
Drawing his submissions from the idea that every society will always, at different points of its existence draw ideas from past events to understand the present realities it is facing and make possible projections about the future, Comrade Ini Ememobong urged the students to amass the skills that will help Nigeria as a nation make sense of, and provide solutions to the different History-related Challenges bedeviling the nation.
“Take the Boko Haram insurgency plaguing Northern Nigeria or the Militancy in the Niger Delta cases in point: You cannot deny the fact that the provision of ample Historical data on how these unrests began and their metamorphosis will be highly instrumental to the Nation’s search for solutions to these menaces. There is hardly any field of human endeavor that History cannot find its relevance and application. And because the world we live in is a dynamic one, emerging realities and conditions will always arise that will open up newer opportunities for Historians. So in the years ahead, I want to see Historians organize themselves into a strong professional front in a way that benefit the practice. I and other Nigerians also wish to see even more applications of History in the task of providing solutions to Nigeria’s numerous challenges.”
