The attention of our group, Good Governance Advocacy Forum (GGAF) has been drawn to a meeting of Itu/Ibiono Ibom stakeholders scheduled for today, February 4, 2022, at the palace of the Paramount Ruler of Ibiono Ibom, HRM Okuku Dr. Ime Udousoro Inyang by 2pm.

Such intended convergence in a democratic space and in an election season, ordinarily, should not raise an eyebrow but not for its intents and purposes which are clearly in conflict with the prevailing peace and the continuous pursuit of political stability in Akwa Ibom State. Our worries are triggered by gleaned informations at our disposal.

The planned meeting will seek to needlessly exhume the issue of micro-zoning for the governorship question which Akwa Ibom people had consensually buried by overwhelming consensus after the eight year tenure of former governor, Obong Victor Attah. In the political events preceding the advent of the Akpabio administration in 2007, The Office of Governor was explicitly ceded to Ikot Ekpene Senatorial District and not Ikot Ekpene Federal Constituency where Chief Godswill Akpabio later emerged to succeed Obong Attah.
It is pertinent to state that the likes of Udoma Bob Ekarika and Atuekong Don Etiebiet who are not from the same federal constituency as Ex-governor Akpabio stayed in the race till the end when a winner emerged.

Should we respectfully remind Their Majesties as well as other Itu/Ibiono Ibom stakeholders that even in 2014/2015 when the governorship by established precedence was for Eket Senatorial District, one of their subjects and son [from Itu/Ibiono Ibom Federal Constituency in Uyo Senatorial District] aspired prominently for the job? Would the stakeholders be advocating today that the office be micro-zoned if their federal constituency was successful in that 2014/2015 contest and thereby thwarted the unwritten understanding between the three Senatorial Districts that has ensured relative peace and calm and significantly reduced tensions?
On what moral basis then is their current micro-zoning agitation premised?

At this point, it must be re-emphasized that the governorship of Akwa Ibom from 1999 till today has rotated on the larger zoning template of senatorial district and never on the narrow prism of federal constituency. We pray Their Majesties would allow rationality override emotions and sentiments in the end in the larger interest of Akwa Ibom.

So far, we are not aware that any of their subjects is barred from partaking in the contest. Itu/Ibiono Federal Constituency is a bloc in and component of Uyo Senatorial District and any of its constituents who is qualified and interested in the job should present himself or herself to the generality of Akwa Ibom people for election. Else, if we allow these narrowed considerations to flourish, we might wake up some day to contend with clans and family units demanding that The Office of Governor be ‘mini-micro-zoned’ to them.

Lastly, the Forum acknowledges that traditional institutions have roles to play in politics but we also know that such roles are limited to particularly, wise counsels, blessings and non discriminatory acts. As primary custodians of our cultures and value systems, we respectfully implore their Royal Majesties and other chiefs to only consent to decisions that will sustain reverence of their thrones and names and preserve the peace that our beloved state is currently enjoying.
