Akwa Ibom icon, music legend and highlife maestro, Dr. Uko Akpan Ekpo Umana is no more.

Dr Uko Akpan from Ikot Obong in Afaha Obong, Abak Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State died at the age of 88.

Though he was not opportune to acquire formal education, Uko Akpan through dint of hard work has carved a niche for himself in the music industry, performing till death.

It was in recognition of his outstanding performance, that the University of Uyo in 2018, awarded Uko Akpan a Doctor of Music Honoris Causa.

Dr. Uko Akpan will be greatly missed for his commitment to African highlife, uniting the older and younger generation, none of whom, has been able to reach him in the performing art.

He came to limelight at the age of 15 after participating in the 1977 national Festival of Arts and Cultural, FESTAC.

His fans will always remember him for hit tracks including “Se Ukpono Se’jen Akpono Ette, Nse Agwo Anam Ari Dakwo Fun, Anyie Agwo Eku Abogho, Mkpa Asong anyen Abogho and Naira Udorji, Edemne Ema Agwo Inogho Uko’kpan”.
