In a bid to better the welfare of Akwa Ibom students, Special Assistant to Governor Udom Emmanuel on Student Matters, Comrade Aquila Otobong Akpan, has launched Students Welfare Intervention Scheme.
The event which took place at the Conference Hall of the Ibom E-Library had the Commissioner for Education, Elder Aniekan Akpan, other officials from his Ministry, representative of the Commissioner for Information, tutors and students drawn from tertiary institutions and secondary schools drawn from tertiary institutions, secondary schools and primary schools across the state.
Speaking, Comrade Akpan said “the scheme is the latest in a long list of tangible initiatives spearheaded by my office with support from government via the Ministry of Education. The programme will surely make students arise in consonance with the Dakkada philosophy.”
She disclosed that the programme shall be expanded to accommodate more beneficiaries, and urged them to justify the gesture by studying hard.
Comrade Akpan lauded Governor Emmanuel for being student friendly and reassured the governor of maximum support from the student community.
On his part, the Education Commissioner, Elder Aniekan Akpan, expressed satisfaction over the exploits, adding that the student community has never had it so good.
He described the scheme as a timely act that falls in line with the present administration’s cardinal objective of offering qualitative education to Akwa Ibom students.
Inaugurating the scheme, the Commissioner called on beneficiaries to utilize the opportunity granted them judiciously.
Also speaking, the Commissioner for Information and Communications, Mr. Aniekan Umanah, who was represented by Director of Information, Mr. Joseph Edem, noted that the scheme will surely consolidate the free education policy of the present administration and promised the scheme massive publicity by the ministry.
The event, which featured donation of wheel chairs, hearing aids, tape recorders, writing boards, presentation of cheques for payment of tuition fees and payment of hospitals bills, had Miss Eno Ita and Idorenyin Uweh as some of its beneficiaries.
