THE UNCOMMON FAILURE OF SENATOR AKPABIO

By Idorenyin UMOH

It still sounds unbelievable but true. Nobody, in his right senses, would bet his money on Akpabio losing his senatorial seat. I wouldn’t try it. The man has clout, gait, charisma, word power, oratory, deep pocket, Federal Might, etc. I could go on and on.

But suddenly , It happened. He lost to a politician that had long been forgotten in the affairs of Akwa Ibom. A man, as word on the street would allege, didn’t spend up to 300k in the elections. In a senatorial district of 10 LGAs, Akpabio lost in 8. I mean 8!

This failure is uncommon! Oh Akpabio! Udo idung ima! Yet, he promised the President that he would deliver Akwa Ibom in three hours but took THREE DAYS TO DELIVER HIMSELF but still failed. In times like this, I remember the eternal words of the Holy Bible in I Sam 2:3 which reads: “Let not arrogance come out of your mouth. For the Lord is a God of knowledge. And with Him, actions are weighed. Talk no more exceedingly so proudly.”

All evening, I have been ruminating on this loss of Akpabio and I learnt few lessons. They include , but not limited to: Never underestimate anybody. Consult widely before taking decisions that have a huge effect on those following you. When God makes you a king, don’t think you are God. What money cannot do, only God and the people can do. We still have Nigerians with unshakeable integrity and Mr. Mike Igini is one of them. The people are the final obongowo.

I just wish I could yung idung this night.
