SUSTAINABLE DEVT CANNOT BE ACHIEVED WITHOUT ADEQUATE PLANNING – OKON

Akwa Ibom State Commissioner for Economic Development and Ibom Deep Seaport, Mr. Akan Okon says the state can only achieve sustainable development when there is proper planning. To achieve this, the Ministry has partnered stakeholders for the production of a demographic database that would serve as a road that would guide the government in its economic development plans.

Speaking, Wednesday at the conference room of the Ministry while declaring open a three day stakeholders consultation and desk review workshop with the theme: ‘Towards the development of Akwa Ibom demographic dividend road map’, Mr. Okon explained that the workshop was aimed at achieving the goals of sustainable development. He charged participants to take the workshop seriously, saying government expects them to brain storm and come out with a demographic roadmap that would guide the state as it seeks to meet the yearnings and aspirations of the citizenry.

“It is my belief that you people will help the government have the right data. This is a critical assignment that we have to carry out”.

The Commissioner faulted the 2006 census for not reflecting the true position of things. “If we continue to project on this wrong premise, we will continue to have problems, and wrong figure would affect planning”.

Earlier, the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry, Mr. Ekpenyong Effiong in his speech, described the exercise as a good roadmap that would enhance the development of Akwa Ibom youths.

Consultant at the workshop, Dr. Victor Ben, a demographer and Lecturer in the department of Sociology, University of Uyo took time to explain the imperatives of demographic dividends and also guided participants on how to achieve a roadmap for the sustainable development of the state.

Among participants at the workshop include, Directors in the Ministry of Economic Development and Ibom Deep Seaport, Head of Planning, Research and Statistics drawn from Ministries, Department and Agencies of government, Representatives of Civil Society Organizations, Akwa Ibom State University, AKSU, University of Uyo, Representative from National Population Commission, NPC Akwa Ibom Office among others.

The three day workshop hosted by Akwa Ibom State government in collaboration with United Nations Populations Fund, UNFPA, will be rounded off on Friday.
