BE PART OF THE LARGER MATRIX OF GOVERNANCE – UDOM URGES

Governor Udom Emmanuel of Akwa Ibom State has urged indigenes and residents of the state to support, own up government and be part of the larger matrix of governance.
The Governor, who made this known through his Special Adviser on Political, Legislative Affairs and Water Resources, Barrister Ekong Sampson, during the flagged off the 4th phase of the Enumeration Area Demarcation (EAD) exercise for the South-South zone in Ikot Ekpene Local Government Area organized by the National Population Commission (NPC), charged the people to shun needless apathy and take advantage of the event.
“In consciously owing the government, people will readily protect infrastructure, promote security and investment and mainstream the driving of the Enumeration Area Demarcation and the range of other civic responsibilities such as voters’ registration, National Identification Number programme and others. The time has come for needless apathy to be removed from our body politic. Let policy drive politics and not the other way round. Today’s occasion, therefore, offers an opportunity to discourage apathy and greatly encourage the mobilization of our people for national planning,” he stressed.
The Governor thanked the leadership of the NPC for collaboration and for finding Akwa Ibom worthy for selection to play the lead role among states in the South-South geo-political zone.
He stated that estimations based on the last census places the population of Akwa Ibom State at over 6 million, noting that the figure would have greatly increased due the relocation of Akwa Ibom peoples from crisis zones around the country, the infrastructure and industrial renaissance as well as the free and compulsory education in the State for every Nigerian child resident in the State, irrespective of state of origin.
In his remarks, the Federal Commissioner of the National Population Commission, Engr. Benedict Ukpong, commended the State Governor’s concerns for population matters in the State and also acknowledged the roles played by the State Government in the huge successes recorded in the previous phases of the exercise in Oron and Nsit Ibom.
Engr. Ukpong assured that the exercise will deploy Satellite Imagery (SI) and Personal Digital Assistant (PDA) technologies as well as the Global Positioning System (GPS) to guarantee excellent coverage and accuracy. He also said the NPC will be working with the INEC and UNICEF to ensure scientific delineation and documentation of existing wards as well as a mop-up birth registration programme.
The event, which was flagged off by the State Deputy Governor, was attended by representative of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC); the Commissioner for Science and Technology, Dr Nse Essien; the Chairman of Ibom Power, Engr. Etido Inyang; Transition Chairman of Ikot Ekpene, Mr. David Umana; Senator Emmanuel Ibok-Essien; members of the Ikot Ekpene Traditional Rulers’ Council and other stakeholders.
