The Nigerian Institute of Public Relations (NIPR), has challenged leaders across different levels in the country to acquire fundamental values required for impactful leadership and good governance.

NIPR President, Dr. Ike Neliaku made the call on Thursday during the 2024 Corporate Charisma Conference of the Institute of Personality Development & Customer Relationship Management (IPDCRM) in Ibadan, Oyo State.

Represented by the Institute’s Vice President, Prof. Emmanuel Dandaura, the President in his presentation titled “Building Leadership and Personality Development for Economic Recovery” emphasized that leaders should arm themselves with new skills that will help them adapt to continuously evolving trends in society.

While stressing that learning is very crucial for leaders to effectively influence their followers, the NIPR boss urged those in positions of authority to pay attention to technology, learn, unlearn, and relearn to drop wrong habits that do not fit into the new culture.

“The issues of integrity, honesty, upholding family name and honor among others are some of the values that Nigeria and indeed, Africa, were known for until recently. Those are values that define leadership in Africa, they are still relevant in today’s leadership landscape and we must work hard through a deliberate and conscious effort to regain them”, he stated.

In his remarks, the Senior Special Assistant to President Bola Tinubu, Mr. Dapo Oyewole emphasized the need for competent leadership across the African continent.

He said good leadership inspires young ones, noting that “Leadership is about taking decisions, comportment and actions that affect the society and institutions positively”.

Earlier in his speech, the IPDCRM President, Dr. Ayobami Owolabi called on leaders to learn to groom youths for leadership roles so that they will have competent successor generation in the future.
