Akwa Ibom State Commissioner for Housing and Special Dudites, Mr. Akan Okon, Friday reiterated his confidence and trust in the candidacy of Barrister Etetim Onuk as the Itu people’s choice for the December 2, 2017 Local Government Election, adding that “I can stand as surety for Barrister Etetim Onuk. He will not fail Itu people.”
Mr. Okon, who made this known when the Obong Paul Ekpo-led State Executive of the Peoples’ Democratic Party (PDP) visited the area to flag-off the Local Government Campaign for the forthcoming Local Government Election at the Council Secretariat, Mbak Itam, expressed delight over the success of the event, saying “Everything that happened today is beyond any man’s power because that is how God wanted it to be and I don’t think anybody can challenge it and I am very happy about it. The mammoth crowd that came out here today is a testament to the fact that PDP is rooted in Itu Local Government Area and that come December 2, 2017, PDP will win landslide in Itu Local Government Area. It shows the level of cooperation and unity and the belief of the people that PDP is the only party that can deliver dividends of democracy to them.”
On the violence-free nature of the event despite the alleged insecurity of the area, the Commissioner said “Itu is a very peaceful local government and its people are peace loving people and I think those that thought of violence were only imagining it.”
“Itu people are indeed happy with the leadership style of Governor Udom Emmanuel. Today, we live in a global community and we know what has been happening in other states where salaries are not being paid and many other things but in Akwa Ibom State, notwithstanding the present economic challenges, the Governor is able to pay salaries as at when due. He is able to pay pensioners and school fees for school children and he has been able to embark on many capital intensive projects. The industrialization programme of the government is ongoing and to that extent, Itu people are very happy and I will say come 2019, we will deliver the Governor 100% for a second term in office,” he emphasized.
Mr. Okon further said the people’s choice of the chairmanship flag bearer of the PDP in the local government area was borne out of his experience and professionalism in his chosen career.
According to the Housing and Special Duties Commissioner, “I am a seasoned professional and part of what I have learned over years is to be able to identify a potential in any individual and for me, Barrister Onuk is an embodiment of potentials that is needed to move this local government forward. As you are aware, he is a seasoned lawyer and he has been able to run a business that is employing people and I believe if he brings that idea to run the local government he will add value and move the local government to where it is supposed to be.”
