Akwa Ibom State Commissioner for Economic Development and Ibom Deep Seaport, Mr. Akan Okon, on Friday, expressed delight over the Federal Government’s commitment to ensuring speedy completion of the Ibom Deep Seaport Project (IDSP).

Mr. Okon made this known when he, alongside the Commissioner for Works, Akparawa Ephraim Inyang, and that of Information and Strategy, Mr. Charles Udoh, led a high-powered team of Ministerial Project Development and Steering Committee (MPDSC); Infrastructure Concession Regulatory Commission (ICRC), and the Nigeria Port Authority (NPA) on an assessment tour of the IDSP project.

While speaking with journalists, the Commissioner further expressed optimism that the proposed March 2020 Operation timeline will be made, considering the level of support and commitment so far made by the Governor Udom Emmanuel’s administration towards the project

In his remarks, the Director of Legal Service in the Federal Ministry of Transportation, Mr. Pius Oteh, who led the high-powered team, said “the Ministry is not just committed to the completion of IDSP but will ensure that all the regulatory bodies with oversight on seaport projects play their parts speedily.”

Also speaking, Engr. Chidi Izuwah, the Director General of Infrastructure Concession Regulatory Commission (ICRC), established by Act 2005 to promote, facilitate, support and coordinate implementation of a sound PPP process, said IDSP was safe for operation.
“The project is good for the development of the South-South. We are here to verify and to ensure it becomes a reality because it will give over 10,000 direct jobs to Nigerians. It is something that is so important to us. I wish the port was on and running right away,” he added.

Engr. Izuwah expressed satisfaction with the road infrastructure outlay designed for access to and evacuation of goods and services from the seaport, saying “it is world-class and visionary. The Seaport will be harnessed by the Federal Government in collaboration with the Akwa Ibom State Government, Technical Partners and core investors.”

Also in the team were the Senator Representing Eket Senatorial District, Senator Akon Eyakenyi; Chairman of the Steering Committee on IDSP, Barrister Mfon Usoro; stakeholders in the seaport project among others.
