AKWAPOLY: STAFF ACCUSES RECTOR’S CRITICS OF EVADING PERTINENT QUESTIONS

By Victoria Friday

Staff of the Akwa Ibom State Polytechnic, Ikot Osurua have accused some critics conspiring and sabotaging the ongoing reforms instituted by the Acting Rector, Dr Moses Umobong, of evading pertinent questions that exposes their hypocrisy and disdain for radical reforms aimed at repositioning the Polytechnic in line with the international best practices.

In a chat with our reporter, the staff mostly lecturers of the institution said, the implementation of the policy of prompt release of result pioneered by the Dr Umobong led management team has gone a long way to restoring the pride of the polytechnic as an academic institution.

They submitted that no polytechnic worth its name and desirous of competing favourable with its counterpart around the world will fail in it’s primary task of releasing students results on time and expect to be taken serious by stakeholders within the education sector. This they noted has gone a long way to changing the bad perception the school had in the recent past.

On the controversy over the construction of the proposed academic block, they stated that the allegations against the Acting Rector are totally false, baseless and borne out of mischief.

“Let’s face the facts of the matter as they are. Let’s ask pertinent questions and demand answers. Where is the Bill of Quantities? Did the Finance and General Purpose Committee (FGPC) of the institution consider the building documents? Did it obtain approval of the Governing Council? What was the extent of the approval? Is the level of work as stated in the Bill of quantities different from what is on ground? These are issues that must be looked at to determine who is the hero and who is the villain on this issue”, said a ranking member of ASUP who did not want his name in print.

In a related development, the institutions unions have called on the Acting Rector not to be distracted or discouraged because the issue at stake is a clear case of corruption fighting back when any visionary leader is poised to sanitise a system that was hitherto resistant to change and fresh ideas. They called on Dr Umobong to remain focused, courageous and determined to consolidate and leave lasting legacies that posterity will always judge him right based on his actions and policies that bothers on the greater good.

Speaking to our reporter, the Chairman of ASUP, Comrade Iboro Ibara described the allegations as false and baseless while his counterpart and Chairman of NASU in Akwapoly, Mr Saturday Jackson called on all relevant stakeholders to ignore the false publication and support the Rector in his avowed determination to take the polytechnic to greater height.

On his part, the Chairman of Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Polytechnic, Akwa Ibom State Chapter, Elder Comrade Emmanuel Ekpo, submitted that with Dr Moses Umobong on the saddle as Rector, the polytechnic will witness more radical reforms aimed at repositioning the school to achieve greater height and called for the support and solidarity of all to enable him succeed.
