State Commissioner for Finance, Mr. Akan Okon, has stated that the ingenuity of Governor Udom Emmanuel in the last one year made it possible for the State to realize over N3billion as Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) monthly.
Mr. Okon, who was answering questions from journalists during a media chat at the instance of the State Chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), said such a feat has never been recorded in the history of the state, and attributed it to the government’s ability to check leakages and the increase in the number of investments and people under the tax net.
He hinted that the figure was gotten from the returns of taxes and other internal revenue sources.
“I like to state for the records that at no particular time did the Akwa Ibom State Government receive IGR up to N3billion, except during the tenure of Governor Udom Emmanuel… throughout the 29 years of Akwa Ibom State, at no time did she receive IGR up to N3billion except during the government of Governor Udom Emmanuel, I think that should be a kudos to this government.”
He added that the Ministry of Finance is working tirelessly to generate more money internally on monthly basis as such generated revenue is shared into projects and funding for local government.
The Commissioner stated that the introduction of the e-receipt has greatly helped the state to cut cost.
According to him, “it will take some time before it applied at the local government levels but in no distant time, paper receipts will be phased out in the state.”
