Speaker of the Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Aniekan Bassey, has raised alarm over the incessant fake facebook accounts on his personality and identity by internet fraudsters and impostors.
A statement signed by the Speaker’s Special Assistant on Media and Communications, Mr. Darlington Udobong, said “The attention of the Speaker of the Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Aniekan Bassey, has been drawn to yet another fake Facebook account, Rt Hon Aniekan Bassey, created by internet fraudsters, impostors and impersonators with the sole aim of defrauding and deceiving the general public.”
“Though the name and photographs in the said account are Rt. Hon. Aniekan Bassey’s, the account is never his and does not represent or reflect the true identity and personality of Rt. Hon. Aniekan Bassey. It is regrettable that this act of creating fake Facebook account in the Speaker’s official name and identity has become one too many.”
The statement further said “The Speaker sincerely appeals to the general public to beware of these internet fraudsters, who are using Facebook and other social media handles to commit atrocities and deceptions. The Speaker, therefore, distances himself from these Facebook accounts and all communications emanating therefrom.”
The statement urged security agencies to bring to book the perpetrators, saying “the Speaker warns those using the internet to blackmail, defraud, and create mischief to refrain from it. He has further notified security agencies to ensure these internet fraudsters, impersonators and impostors face the wrath of the law.”
