As part of efforts to eradicate Vesico Vaginal Fistula (VVF) in the State by 2030, the Cross River State Ministry of Health in collaboration with UNFPA and the Fistula Foundation of Nigeria (FFN) has completed another round of VVF repairs in the State. In this round, 50 fistula clients were targeted for repair and community reintegration.
The Cross River State Government has trained and sensitized 18 community mobilization officers, one for each LGA, on active case finding for VVF and creating adequate awareness across the State. All these are geared towards ensuring that the State aligns with the SDG3 target of the year 2030 to rid the world of VVF. -Dr. Inyang Asibong; Commissioner for Health.
Dr. Kenneth Ehouzou, Head of the UNFPA office in the State, opined that his organization is committed towards ending fistula in the state, hence the continued support. While the founder of the Fistula Foundation of Nigeria (FFN), Dr. Isa Musa, pointed that the foundation is thankful to the State Commissioner and State Government for the opportunity to carry out the repairs, whilst acknowledging UNFPA for their green leaf towards VVF patients.
One of the beneficiaries, Miss Mfon Bassey, thanked Governor Ayade and the entire State Government for the breath of fresh air following the success of her surgery and reintegration into her community. She however called on people still leaving in hiding to come out and take advantage of this opportunity.
This represents the third set of free VVF repair and reintegration campaign organized by the State Government this year, where more than 2000 patients have been given renewed hope.
