UDOM PROSCRIBES USE OF SIREN IN A’IBOM

Rising from an emergency State Executive Council meeting, Akwa Ibom State Government has proscribed the use of siren by unauthorised persons in the state and has accordingly directed Law Enforcement Agents to apprehend defaulters.

The ban is to bring sanity and forestall wrong usage of sirens within the state.

The State Commissioner of Information, Mr. Charles Udoh, made this known while briefing Government House Correspondents shortly after the meeting presided over by the State Governor, Mr Udom Emmanuel, at the Executive Council Chamber, Government House, Uyo.

The Information Commissioner stated that the law has authorised the State Governor, Deputy Governor, Speaker of the state House of Assembly to use the siren. Others permitted are Ambulances and Fire fighting Trucks on emergencies.

His words, ” the Council frowns at the indiscriminate use of sirens by people in the State, the law prescribes that only 3 people are permitted to use siren; these persons are His Excellency the Governor, Deputy Governor and the Speaker.

“Every other person who uses siren in the state is doing so illegally and the council has also mandated the security agencies to apprehend anyone who violates this order and bring them to book, the idea is that we need to have a sane society; we need to have a society where there is law and order; we need to have a society where status is respected”.

He announced the preparedness of the state government to host the maiden edition of Education Summit, tagged “Human Capacity Development for Sustainable Transformation of Persons and Society”, scheduled for tomorrow Thursday 5th through Friday 6th September 2019 at the Mboho Mkparawa Ibibio Auditorium, Udo Udoma Avenue, Uyo .

Hear him, “basically today’s Executive Council meeting was for the Commissioner of Education, Prof. Nse Essien, to brief council on the preparedness, the state of affairs and everything needed to make the summit a success”.

The Commissioner stated that the summit is meant to address challenges confronting educational sector in the State, and would chart a new course towards upgrading the standard of education as regards facilities, personnel, curriculum, monitoring and feedback mechanism.

He said that participants will be drawn from Academia, School Administrators, Teachers, Proprietor of Schools and stakeholders in the education sector .

Speaking further, the Info boss said “teachers in public schools today earn more than teachers in private schools, they get paid on time, with their pensions and gratuities guaranteed at the end of their service.

“However, if you flip the other way and look at the private schools you see the quality of teachers they’ve got, the level of commitment and the fact that they earn less than teachers in the public schools yet they give more commitment to their duties, this is worrisome”.

He added “Government is commitment to ensuring that at the end of that summit on Friday we would rise to say these are the challenges from across board and these are the milestones we need to achieve for our people to reach that envisaged promised land”.

The Commissioner explained that the Council also deliberated on the 32nd anniversary of the state creation and decided that it would be low key in terms of fan fare .

He hinted that the anniversary would feature commissioning of the Digital Power Substation at Ekim, Kings Flour Mill, Plywood Factory, Renovated Immanuel Hospital at Eket, General Hospital at Awa -Onna Local Government Area and some dualized road projects by the Vice President Prof. Yemi Osinbajo

“Also deliberated at the floor of the house was the fact that later this month, Akwa Ibom State will be 32. To mark that anniversary, government has clearly said that this year celebration will be a low key event, where there will not be too much of fanfare since it is not a landmark event as we had in 2017 during the 30th anniversary of the state. Here emphasis will be mostly on project commissioning”, he explained.
