UDOM EXTENDS REACH OF FREE EDUCATION TO COMMUNITY SECONDARY SCHOOLS

The Akwa Ibom State Government has taken over Uda Community Secondary School, Afi -Uda, Mbo Local Government Area with effect from the 2018/2019 school year.

The takeover documents were formally handed over to the stakeholders of Uda community on Monday, by the Secretary to the State Government, Dr Emmanuel Ekuwem, himself an indigene of the area.

Speaking at the event held at the School Auditorium, Dr Ekuwem, said the gesture was in demonstration of the commitment of Governor Udom Emmanuel administration to sustaining the Free and Compulsory Education policy in the state.

While thanking Governor Emmanuel for his keen interest in the taking over the school, Ekuwem added that the state government was committed to the provision of quality education for its citizens, hence the takeover of the school.

He paid tributes to the founding fathers of the school for their foresight, patriotism and for sustaining the the school over the years as a non fee paying college. He charged the students to take their studies seriously in order to be useful to themselves in particular and society.

“As from today (Monday, October 15, 2018), no more school fees. All the teachers of this school are now in the payroll of government. Principal, Vice Principal and all the teachers are now staff of the Ministry of Education”, he said.

He promised that challenges facing the school such as fencing, laboratories, more staff quarters and dormitories,among others would be looked into by the state government.

While assuring that Ibaka Community Secondary School and Unyenge Community Secondary School, all in Mbo local government area, will also be taken over by the State Government, the State Chief Scribe solicited his kinsmen to weigh in on the second term bid of Governor Udom Emmanuel.

Earlier, the Principal of the School, Chief Sylvester Nyong in a remark, thanked the State Governor for “graciously granting approval”for the take-over of the school and for fostering political inclusion in Akwa Ibom through the appointment of an illustrious son of the area, Dr Emmanuel Ekuwem as the SSG.

Chief Nyong listed one of the areas that need government intervention to include six years backlog of debt owed West African Examination Council which he said has resulted in withholding of certificates of students by the examination body.

The Village Head of Afi-Uda, Ovong Clement Ekuwem who spoke on behalf of the Village Heads in Uda Community, appealed to the State Government to expedite action on the completion of Etebi /Enwang road in order to alleviate the suffering of students and commuters , to complement the taking over of the school by the state government .

Also speaking, the President-General of Uda Community Development Union, Chief Ibok Asanaenyi, said with the taking over of the school, Uda community will now “heave a sigh of relief” in terms of funding of the school and prayed God to bless the Governor and the SSG.
Chief Asanaenyi appealled to the state government to establish a technical college in Mbo to train low level man power for the Ibom Deep Seaport .
