SHAMEFUL, FEARFUL INSECURITY SITUATION IN UNIUYO

University of Uyo condition in terms of awful security situation was further exposed recently when the female students of the institution protested in the Town Campus of the University against persistent banditry attacks on Female Hostels.

For two consecutive times, W6 the most populated Female Hostel of the University witnessed flurry attacks where students lost their belongings, while some were seriously injured at the process. By means of reaction, the Dean of Student Affairs, Dr Aniekan Brown while playing host with the Akwa Ibom State Commissioner for Education, Dr Nse Essien, said that police have been contacted to mount surveillance on different hostels to forestall further occurrences and to control criminal activities within the campuses of the University.

As usual, management of the University commiserates with students each time there is security fracas on campuses without any workable measures for lasting solutions to term down further occurrences.Today, the insecurity situation in the University has raised palpable fear among staff and students since the great citadel of learning has been upturned to a safe heaven for criminal activities and banditry hideout.

Within a semester, more than hundred students lost their belongings in open and secret robbery by suspected members of cult groups. Prior to the most recent attacks on Female Hostels, few months ago, a 300 level students of Communication Arts suspected to be a cultist was killed at the Annex Campuse of University, till today no culprit linked to the sad incidence has been arrested and brought to book.

Sadly, the University has a tedious means of diverting attention while students suffer in silence due to rampaging threat of life as a result of rectitude in the University security management system.

This situation has serious implication in the learning process of undergraduates of the institution. It is worrisome that security in the University is under probability, a situation where students resort to self consciousness and staying off from some quarters of the University especially in the evening peak period. Peace and security is an antidote for a successful teaching and learning. Insecurity can hinder the academic performance of a student. Good or bad academic performance can make or mar the goals of a student’s life as well as the national goals and development. Academic performance entails that students are required to maintain a satisfactory academic record and meet with the obligations of the courses they are enrolled. But this can possibly be achieved in an environment where staff and students are well protected.

No doubt, the accumulation pattern in the population of students is one of the factors for rapid insecurity rate. Without missing words, the rate of criminal and banditry activities is high and need to be controlled. University as a center of research and academic excellent should set the pace for other institutions to emulate.

Nevertheless, to extricate University from the insecurity trap, first, the University should not just employ mere gatemen to oversee the the security problems of the institution. Government should make available trained security personnel to patrol and monitor the activities of heartless men who have made stealing and cultism their new means of earnings from the University. University Authority should be accountable for what happens to a student and stop exposing future leaders and captains of industries to hoodlums which will have psychological effect in their academic performance.

It is to be noted that our recommendations would fade away if the University management continues with the blame game without any prompt action. An atmosphere of insecurity is counterproductive to smooth learning, and if no action is taken the gap between the University output and labour market demands will continue to widen. Authorities in the country should understand that the worsening state of insecurity is a sure creator of more abject poverty.
