POLICY ALERT TRAINS JOURNALISTS ON COVERING CORRUPTION

Policy Alert, Next Edition Centre for Investigative Journalism and Gender Advocacy (NECIJGA) and the Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ) Akwa Ibom State Council, on Thursday held a special capacity building programme for journalists in Uyo.

The event, tagged “Journalism Retool House” and scheduled to run for two days at the NUJ Press Centre, has on its list of resource persons media notables such as Reuben Abati, Sola Ajay, Ray Ekpu, Ibanga Isine and Sam Akpe.

A statement issued by Policy Alert notes that the first day of the event, which will focus on the theme “Covering Corruption: State budgets and the Freedom of Information Act 2011 as tools for the Investigative Journalist”, is supported by Actionaid Nigeria as part of its Strengthening Citizens Resistance against the Prevalence of Corruption (SCRAP-C) project through a funding from UKAid.

“Journalists have an important role to play in shaping social norms and creating political disincentives to corrupt behavior. But as corrupt officials and institutions are upping their game by the day, journalists also need to be equipped with cutting edge tools to discharge their role of covering corruption cases effectively, which is why we created the Special House focusing on Covering Corruption as the first part of the two-day Journalism Retool House House” said Tijah Bolton-Akpan, Executive Director of Policy Alert. The second day is an Open House and has the theme “Conflict sensitive reportage and constructive engagement of state actors”.

The statement announced that the event will hold at the NUJ Press Centre, Information Drive, Uyo on Thursday and Friday the 27th and 28th October, 2019.
