PDP Defenders, an initiative of Akwa Ibom PDP Chairmanship and Councillorship aspirants, have lauded Governor Udom Emmanuel on his “sweeping victory” at the local government polls.
Speaking through their Coordinator, Mr. Cyril Umoren, during a media briefing on Monday in Uyo, the PDP Defenders said by emerging victorious in all the 31 Local Government Areas and 329 Ward of the state was a rare feat, though expected due to hard work, commitment and dedication.
According to Mr. Umoren, “We had over 270 Chairmanship aspirants and 700 Councillorship aspirants in the just concluded PDP primaries who are members of the PDP Defenders and together we have covered the 329 Wards and 31 LGAs effectively. So, from available reports from our members, the elections were fair and credibly conducted. We congratulate Governor Udom Emmanuel, who is the leader of the party, for the excellent display of courage and for the victory that he has acquired for the party. We also congratulate the hardworking State Chairman of PDP, Obong Paul Ekpo, and the Special Adviser to the Governor on Political and Legislative Affairs, Barrister Ekong Sampson.”
“I will like to put it on record that PDP Defenders from all the 31 Local Government Areas are present here in this press conference and therefore it has become very important in view of the victory that PDP has recorded throughout the 31 LGAs and the 329 Wards. We are here to let the whole world know that as committed party faithful, as those who have decided to pledge their absolute loyalty to the party and to the leadership of the party, as those who gave their commitment to defend and deliver the candidates of party come December 2, 2017. We are here today to say that we have kept faith and delivered on our promise. We are very such that in 2019, we will also deliver the entire Akwa Ibom State to Deacon Udom Emmanuel,” he maintained.
The Coordinator, who described PDP Defenders as “committed and eligible Akwa Ibom sons and daughters that stood for the PDP primaries and did not get the tickets and yet decided that those who got the tickets must be defended,” acknowledged the role of Akwa Ibom State Independent Electoral Commission (AKISIEC) in conducting free, fair and credible.
He thanked the Commission for conducting “elections that witnessed zero violence as against what used to be in time passed. We thank other political party for their cooperation. We are aware that other political parties have acknowledged that the elections were free, fair and credible and that the victory of PDP is not assumed victory but total and realistic victory based on hard work and dedication.”
Mr. Umoren said the just concluded local government election was a “litmus test to what is going to be prevalent in 2019 and we did not doubt the capacity of PDP. In 2019, Governor Udom Emmanuel will be returned to the Hilltop Mansion for a second term.”
The Coordinator, who said the PDP Defenders were promise keepers, further stressed, “We want to let the world know that whenever we make a promise, we make a promise that we intend to keep. We made a promise to the Governor that against all odds, the PDP Defenders will defend the respective Units, Wards and Local Government Areas. Today, we have kept that promise. So, it is important for the world to know that we are promise keepers and they should reckon with us as people capable of keeping electoral promise.”
