The Ekere family of Ikot Oboroenyin, Edemaya in Ikot Abasi Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State has announced activities for the obsequies of its Patriarch and father, late Sir (Obong) Gabriel Sampson Ekere, who “joined the Saint triumphant on Thursday, June 3, 2021, at the age of 90 years.”
A statement by the eldest son and chief mourner, Professor Aniekan Ekere, said “the deceased lived a courageous, graceful and impactful life with a distinguished career that spanned over five decades as a revered school teacher, sports administrator, public servant and community leader.”
Passionate about the Methodist Church, education of the youth, prosperity and wellbeing of mankind, late Sir G. S. Ekere invested his energy, love and resources to build people and the community.
Accordingly, after consultation with the Church and community, the celebration of the impactful life of the community leader, patriarch and statesman will begin on Thursday, 9th of September 2021, with a night of tributes and service of songs by 6pm.
The Lying in State, Christian Wake and Friend’s Night is scheduled for Friday, 10th of September 2021, by 6pm at the family compound, Ikot Oborenyin, Edemaya in Ikot Abasi Local Government Area.
The funeral service and interment shall be conducted by the Methodist Church Nigeria , Ikot Oboroenyin, Edemaya in Ikot Abasi Local Government Area, on Saturday, 11th September 2021 by 10am prompt.
There will also be memorial Golf Kitty at the Ibom Golf Resort, Uyo, in honour of the deceased and a football match between Ikot Oboroenyin and Edemaya.
The late Sir G. S. Ekere was survived by children, in-laws, grandchildren and numerous other relations among whom is His Excellency, Obong Nsima Ekere, a former Deputy Governor of Akwa Ibom State, and Managing Director of Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC).
The family further invites friends, associates and well-wishers to the celebration.
