IKONO/INI REP SUES FOR INTERVENTION ON RECENT LANDSLIDE IN AKWA IBOM STATE

Succour is set to come to the people of Akwa Ibom State residing in Odoro Ikpe and Ibam Edet communities of the state as the attention of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) is being drawn to the recent devastating incident of landslide in the area.

This is sequel to a motion brought before the Lower Chamber of the National Assembly by the Member representing Ikono/Ini Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, Obong Emmanuel Ukpong-udo during plenary on Thursday 14th November 2019.

Presenting the motion as a matter of urgent public importance, Hon. Ukpong-udo noted that following recent heavy downpours in the state that led to excessive flood and erosion, serious havoc has been wrecked in these communities. He told the House that many have been rendered homeless, as houses have been submerged, while schools, health centres and farmlands have also been destroyed. This has resulted in adverse health consequences mostly on women and children in the affected areas.

The House of Representatives leadership has urged the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) to hurriedly provide relief materials for the landslide victims. The House also urged the Ecological Fund Office to conduct an environmental assessment of the area with a view to addressing the flooding in Odoro Ikpe, Ibam Edet as well as other nearby communities to forestall reoccurrence. The House Committee on Emergency and Disaster Preparedness was also mandated to ensure the timely implementation of these resolutions.

Speaking after plenary, Hon. Ukpong-udo said that it was imperative to bring the unfortunate incident to the attention of the House, as he would be lagging in his responsibility of representation to his people if their problems could not at least be brought to the fore. He restated his commitment to the well-being of his constituency and promised to prevail on the relevant committees and agencies to address the situation.
