HOODLUMS ATTACK MOUNT ZION GOSPEL CHURCH, SET ALTAR ABLAZE

Hoodlums, on Thursday, June 16, 2015, attacked and set ablaze the altar of the Aka Itiam Assembly of Mount Zion Gospel Church, Uyo Section, destroying property and equipment worth thousands of Naira.

Narrating his ordeal yesterday, the resident Pastor, Elijah Inyang, said the church branch, which started in July 10, 2011, has never had any threat or attack from the community.

“Well, I am short of words to say. This type of incident has never happened. They broke into the church and as you can see, they destroyed our altar and also set it on fire, destroyed all the musical instruments. I am surprised they did not burn the generating set or maybe because it was chained.”

“When I came in this morning I found the place filled with smoke. I believe their intention was to burnt down the building but how God stopped that is a mystery. No one has been caught and I have never had any issue with my members. So, it is still a surprise to me. I want to also call the Akwa Ibom State Government and all the security agencies to come to our aid. The matter should be investigated to know the cause and also bring those involve to book to avoid future occurrence.”

On what could have led to the attack, he said: “I don’t really know but I am going to the police station right away to report the matter. The Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) were here and they have asked me to file the matter at the Ewet Housing Estate Police Division. I am on my way to the station now.”

Though the matter has been reported to the security agencies, similar incident occurred at The Apostolic Church, Bassey Esau Street, and palpable fears has gripped residents fearing if the insurgents have made their way into the state.

Report also has it that another church along Information Drive was also attacked by the clandestine marauders.
