…As Speaker Inaugurates Three Ad Hoc Committees

Following the inauguration of the 9th National Assembly Tuesday June 11, the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Femi Gbajabiamila has inaugurated three House ad hoc committees. The ceremony, which was held at Room 414 of the House of Representatives wing of the National Assembly Complex today, Monday, had in attendance members of the House from across party lines.

The ad hoc committees inaugurated would be in charge of running the affairs of the House pending the constitution of standing committees, and would be in charge of media, welfare and selection. The welfare committee chaired by Rt. Hon. Wale Raji would have the responsibility to allocate offices and provide sitting arrangements for members, while the media committee will interface with the public on behalf of the House and is chaired by Rt. Hon. Khadijat Abba-Ibrahim. The selection committee chaired by the Speaker himself will decide on selection of members and chairmen of standing committees of the House.

Responding shortly after being inaugurated into the House ad hoc committee on welfare as member, the representative of Itu/Ibiono Ibom Federal Constituency, Rt. Hon. Dr. Henry Archibong promised that the committee would deliver on the mandate given to them within the time frame. He thanked the speaker for hitting the ground running after his election and entrusting members with responsibilities. He disclosed that “members of this House are happy with your emergence as Speaker, and we are ready to work with you for the progress of the Assembly and the country”. Dr. Archibong is a second term member of the House of Representatives and is expected to bring his experience to bear in the business of the House.

Recall that the Speaker in his inaugural speech had hinted that the running of the House would no longer be business as usual as he pledged to introduce drastic reforms in piecemeal in order not to shock the system.
