DEMOCRACY: AKHA SPEAKER HARPS ON SYNERGY, LEGISLATIVE CONSCIOUSNESS

Speaker of the Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Aniekan Bassey, has said, for democracy to thrive in Nigeria, there must be proper synergy between the constituents and their representatives as well as legislative consciousness.

Rt. Hon. Bassey stated this on Friday at the opening of a 3-Day Leadership Retreat for New and Returning Members of the Taraba State House of Assembly, led by its Speaker, Mr. Peter Abel Diah, at Ibom Hotel and Golf Resort.

He stressed the “need for legislators to be conscious of their core values as lawmakers and engage their constituents through deliberations to know their major concerns, proffer solutions through Resolutions and Bills. There must be proper feedback mechanism for the sustainability of peace, unity and progress of our locality, state and nation.”

“The essence of government is to meet the needs and aspiration of the people. This is what makes the government legitimate and acceptable. As lawmakers, we must impact on the lives of those we represent,” he said.

Rt. Hon. Bassey thanked the Speaker of the Taraba State House of Assembly, who also represents Mbamga Constituency in Sardauna Local Government Area, for the choice of Akwa Ibom State as the venue for the retreat, maintaining that the hospitable, serene and peaceful ambience have been made possible by Governor Udom Emmanuel.
