ALLEGED RELIGIOUS WAR IN A’IBOM: A NONEXISTENT INSINUATION

By Edifon Abasi-Obot

Attempt by members of the opposition party in Akwa Ibom State to paint a picture of religious discrimination in the State to President Mohammadu Buhari and efforts to drag in the State Governor’s name into the non-existent religious war has been described as unpatriotic and a display of insincerity and selfishness.

Special Adviser to the Governor of Akwa Ibom State on Political/Legislative Affairs and Water Resources, Rt. Hon. (Barr.) Ekong Sampson, made the remarks recently while playing host to the students from various tertiary institutions in the State, under the aegis of Sign On for Udom 2019 Students Wing.

The Special Adviser said the report that some Akwa Ibom people, who have chosen to follow other political parties than the PDP, went to Aso Rock to lament to President Buhari that they are being tagged anti-Christ in the State is very condemnable as well as their attempts to drag the integrity and the name of the State Governor into a futile war.

He asserted that nobody in Akwa Ibom State is called anti-Christ for belonging to any political party, adding that those who give such impressions are just trying to advance their personal interests.

Barrisyer Sampson said the Aso Rock visitors should have been honest enough to convey the realistic picture that Governor Udom Emmanuel enjoys the huge support of his people and that he is well on his way to reelection.

“They should have been honest enough to tell the President that they are actually working for their personal interest and not the President’s, rather than making attempt to conjour a non-existent religious war in the State,” he added.

The Political Affairs boss stressed that nobody that has the interest of Akwa Ibom State at heart would make such insightful and unpatriotic insinuations.

This, he said, is condemnable and totally unacceptable, reiterating that Udom Emmanuel’s Governorship is for all, both Christians and Muslims, stressing that “the State Governor is a seasoned democrat who believes in plurality. All of us must work as a family for the common good of the State. Even those who had cause to leave the PDP have did so purely on personal grounds and not for any reason connected to the President or Akwa Ibom State.”

In his words: “To Governor Udom Emmanuel, Nigerians are Nigerians and humanity is humanity. There is no discrimination between Christians and Muslims. It is very important to note this because some members of the opposition in the State are trying to create a futile war.”

The Governor’s aide thanked the students’ body for believing in Governor Udom Emmanuel’s integrity and for choosing to ignore the peddlers of falsehood, who merely live for the moment.

He said their support for Governor Emmanuel implied charting a course for their future, adding that the integrity and vision that the present administration has demonstrated will continue to be endearing to the students and Akwa Ibom people.

Speaking on behalf of the students, Comrade Harrison Etefia, said no level of blackmail against the Governor would intimidate Akwa Ibom students.

He said the students under the aegis of Sign On for Udom 2019 Students Wing, remained committed to the School-to-School Mobilization Campaign for the Governor’s reelection in 2019.

Comrade Etefia said the students of Akwa Ibom State have condemned the campaign of calumny against Governor Udom Emmanuel, which according to them, is done by enemies of the state with the sole purpose of setting Governor Emmanuel on a collision course with the Presidency and the Federal Government of Nigeria.

He warned the perpetrators to desist from such acts, affirming that the peace the students now enjoy in Akwa Ibom State is as a result of Governor Emmanuel’s integrity and accommodating disposition.

Comrade Etefia reassured that Akwa Ibom students will continue to mobilize support across the campuses for Governor Emmanuel.
