AKWAPOLY SUSPENDS STRIKE: THE DR SAMUEL EDET CONNECTION


The industrial action embarked upon by members of NASU and SSANIP in the Akwa Ibom State Polytechnic, Ikot Osurua has been suspended.The two months old strike which crippled academic activities in the state owned Polytechnic was embarked upon by Non Academic unions operating in the institution.Less then a week since resumption as Acting Chairman of the Governing Council of the institution, Dr. Samuel Edet has breathe a fresh air on the state Polytechnic which has renewed hope as workers resume from the two months strike.Yesterday, leadership of the Unions entered an agreement with officials of the state government led by the Head of the Civil Service, Mrs. Ekereobong Akpan, the Special Adviser on Labour Matters, Comrade Unyime Usoro and the Acting Chairman of the Governing Council of the institution, Dr. Samuel Edet to suspend the two months old strike.In a communiqué issued at the end of the meeting, both parties resolved to forward the report of the committee on harmonisation of schemes of service in tertiary institutions to the Polytechnic’s management for implementation.It was also resolved that the Governing Council of the institution led by Dr. Samuel Edet shall initiate action to review the laws establishing the institution to address issues of tenure of principal officers and 65 years retirement age.Following from this development, full activities in the institution commence immediately.Speaking after the meeting, the Acting Chairman of the Polytechnic’s Governing Council, Dr. Samuel Edet, expressed gratitude to the Governor of the State, Mr. Udom Emmanuel for the concern he has shown to ensure that normal academic activities resumed at the institution and for all he had earlier done to see to it that programmes of the institution received NBTE accreditation.Dr. Edet also thanked the SSG, Engr. Ekuwem and the Head of the Civil Service of the State, Mrs. Ekereobong Akpan for painstakingly pursuing the resolution of the dispute.He used the opportunity to thank the former Chairman of the Governing Council of the institution, Dr. (Mrs) Akon Eyakenyi for having worked towards moving the institution forward saying that the fruits of her endeavours are being reaped today in the institution.The Acting Chairman of the Governing Council appreciated management, staff and students of the institution for their show of understanding and the unions, he called on them to always employ dialogue as they agitate for the rights and welfare of their members.He said that the unions should see the resolution of the dispute as a no victor no vanquished situation while calling on them to always put in their best to the development of the institution of which they are a part.Dr. Edet has shown capacity in repositioning the Polytechnic to a greater citadel of learning with his recent disposition and actions.
