A’IBOM ASSEMBLY SACKS UNIVERSITY LECTURER, PASSES COLLEGE OF ARTS AND SCIENCE AMENDMENT BILL

A bill seeking to reposition the Akwa Ibom State College of Arts and Science in Nung- Ukim, Ikono for effective service delivery has been passed into law by the State House of Assembly.

Titled: “a bill for a law to amend Akwa Ibom State College of Arts and Science and for matters connected therewith, the bill was passed on Tuesday by the House sequel to the consideration of the report of the House committee on Education, submitted by the Chairman, Hon. Samuel Ufuo during plenary. After formal adoption of the report, the House later dissolved into a committee of the whole where the lawmakers undertook a clause – by clause consideration of the 23 items proposed in amendment bill.

 

The bill which has the Member representing Ikot Abasi/Eastern Obolo State constituency, Hon. Uduakududo as the lead sponsor, was read the third time and passed by the House following a motion moved by the House Leader, Sir Udo Kirean and seconded by the Chairman, House Committee on Education, Hon. Samuel Ufuo.

 

Reacting, Speaker of the House, Barrister Onofiok Luke commended the lead sponsor, Hon. Ududoh, co-sponsors as well as entire membership of the House for undertaking the task to reposition the College for effective service delivery to Akwa Ibom people. He noted that the passage of the bill has now given the institution the needed legal backing to operate, would facilitate accreditation of courses offered in the institution. He thanked Education committee Chairman for carrying out a painstaking job on the bill.

 

“The amendment will enable the school to attract funding from TETFUND, private individuals and other organizations”.

 

He pointed out that the move by the House would further position Akwa Ibom as an educationally advantaged state.

 

Also during plenary, the House received a petition by a sacked lecturer with the Akwa Ibom State University, AKSU, Inimfon Akpan who pleaded the House to intervene and direct his employer to reinstate him.

The petition which was read by the Chairman, House Committee on Judiciary, Justice, Human rights and public Petitions, Barr. Aniefiok Dennis, stated that Inimfon had proceeded for further studies only for his employer to terminate his employment claiming that employee didn’t inform the University.

The House has mandated a joint Committee on Judiciary, Human rights and public Petitions and that of Education to investigate the matter and report back to the House within 3 weeks period.

Plenary was adjourned to the 12th of April, 2018.
