The 2019 Budget Estimate, christened “Budget of Industrialization for Poverty Alleviation,” presented by Governor Udom Emmanuel to the Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly, according to analysis, is based on realistic economic development indices.
The State Commissioner for Economic Development, Labour and Manpower Planning, Barrister Ekong Sampson, who gave these indications recently during a chat with newsmen, said the Budget, when implemented, will ensure diversification and secure the future for Akwa Ibom people.
Barrister Sampson noted that the Budget framework has identified key growth indicators, expected to be leveraged upon at a time Akwa Ibom State is enjoying healthy acclaim as the most peaceful state in Nigeria.
He said the Budget encourages production and poverty alleviation, affirming that the Udom Emmanuel administration will continue to promote peace and security to boost investment in the State.
The Commissioner commended Governor Emmanuel for the timely presentation of the 2019 budget estimate to the legislature to allow ample time for deliberations and consideration.
He further described the budget presentation by the Governor as a show of transparency in governance and sincerity of purpose.
In his words: “Governor Udom Emmanuel runs a government that is premised on integrity and transparency. That is what has played out in our budget framework.”
Barrister Sampson also lauded the Governor for maintaining realism in the budget, according to him, there was no need having unnecessarily expansionist framework in the budget process.
He added that “the 2019 budget is such that accommodates realism and a plan for the future of Akwa Ibom people.”
The Commissioner also indicated that the danger of putting all eggs in one basket has persuaded the government of Akwa Ibom State to make efforts to diversify the flanks of the economy, stressing that the 2019 budget showcases innovation, creates opportunities and secures a good future for our people, given the parameters the budget estimate covers.
“One commitment that has guaranteed a great future for our people is the commitment of the present government to industrialization. You can’t just remain fixated on past models. As societies keep evolving, innovations become the defining metaphor of the new age. That is where Governor Udom Emmanuel has the edge, being an innovator. Governance has to embrace innovations for it to have good meaning,” he said.
Barrister Sampson cautioned against attaching unnecessary political sentiments to budget process, emphasizing that the development strategy embedded in the budget estimate has nothing to do with votes seeking.
He added that the Udom Emmanuel-led government does not play politics with development, but has always used policies to drive politics, thereby gaining the confidence of Akwa Ibom people.
