Impeccable Government House sources have confirmed that Thursday invasion of Maitama was on the order of Governor Udom Emmanuel whom, for some time, has being uncomfortable with the spate of operation at the red-light spot.
The sources told Ibom Telegraph that “you know since the Governor shuttles his Ewet Housing residence more often, it became worrisome to him having to see prostitutes whenever he leaves or comes back from the Governor’s Lodge. So, he had to instruct that something be done to put sanity at the entrance.”
It could be recalled that operatives of the Akwa Ibom State Command of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS), on Thursday night embarked on a Gestapo invasion of Uyo popular red-light district, Maitama, located in Ewet Housing Estate.
The Squad raided the main entrance of the Ewet Housing Estate and the adjoining streets, arresting every female in sight, including married women and female corps members who were celebrating their Passing-Out-Parade from the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC).
Eye witness account alleged that over five married women who were either on domestic errands or hanging out with their husbands at different relaxation spots within the raided axis were molested and thrown into waiting patrol vehicles, assaulting their husbands and other male counterpart who dared the operations.
It was also alleged that over 45 female corps members who thronged the area to celebrate their NYSC passing-out were equally squeezed into seven waiting patrol vehicles.
Ibom Telegraph earlier findings had revealed that the operation was at the order of the State Commissioner of Police, Murtala Mani, with the aim of arresting prostitutes at the red-light district.
Our reporter was told that due to inability to do proper identification, the operatives ended up arresting every female in sigh and also raided some hotels in the Housing Estate.
Reacting, the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), ASP Cordelia Nwawe, denied being aware of the raid, saying “I am not aware of the raid. I promise you that proper investigations will commence soon to find out if there was truly a raid.”
